Savor the summer with these tips from your friends at Clearview Energy!
Simple and inexpensive actions can help you save energy and money during the warm spring and summer months.
1. Trap waste!
Seal holes and cracks around doors and windows. Eliminate air leaks around window air conditioners with foam insulation or weather-stripping.
2. Minimize indoor heat.
Run the dryer and dishwasher at night on hot days and let your dishes air dry. Avoid heat-generating incandescent lighting and avoid the use of major appliances between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.
3. Keep the blinds and windows closed during the day and open at night.
This is a no-cost way to keep your home a little cooler. Window, ceiling and whole-house fans are also low-cost ways to keep your home a little cooler. Just be sure you have your ceiling fans in their “summer’ positions.
4. Eliminate wasted energy.
Turn off appliances, lights and equipment when not in use. Unplug electronic devices and chargers when they aren't in use-most new electronics use electricity even when switched "off." Turn computers and printers off at the power strip. Unplug and recycle that spare refrigerator in the garage if you don't really need it.
5. Lower your water heating costs.
Turn down the temperature of your water heater to the warm setting (120°F). You'll not only save energy, you'll avoid scalding your hands.
