To understand demand response, we first need to understand how electricity grids work. Because electricity can’t be stored on a massive scale, energy supply and demand must be kept in balance at all times. When demand for energy drops, power generators are turned down or off, and when demand rises, generators are turned on or up. The challenge with this method is that it causes us to rely on getting our energy from fossil fuel plants that exist only to meet peak energy demands. In addition to being the most expensive form of fuel, fossil fuel plants are the top source of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the US, and the primary cause of global warming.
National Arbor Day is celebrated the last Friday in April, and its traditional observance is to plant a tree. When the first Arbor Day was celebrated on April 10, 1872, an estimated 1 million trees were planted. Imagine how big those 1 million trees are after 143 years!
Arbor Day’s celebration is rooted in the importance of trees to humanity. Like all plant life, trees take carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and produce the air we breathe. They give us shade, prevent erosion, provide the materials for the homes we live in, and are a source of fuel to keep us warm during the cold winter months.
